NEU Black Educators’ Conference Workshop: Challenging the (Ir)resistible rise of Islamophobia

Date: 16 Nov 2019

Time: 1:30pm - 2:30pm

Venue: Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, Portland Street
Manchester, M1 4PH

About this event:

During Islamophobia Awareness Month, MEND will be hosting a workshop in Manchester at the National Education Union’s Black Educators’ Conference.

Living in a diverse world means that educators and the educated must have a thorough understanding of people and their environment. Islamophobia, a global phenomenon, has penetrated into our schools affecting many young people. The role of teachers in tackling this issue is becoming more necessary, therefore this workshop, run by MEND, will help educators to understand and develop their own practice to effectively manage Islamophobic attitudes and behaviours in their own learning environments.

The workshop aims to:
-Define and illustrate the reality of Islamophobia
-Explore how this can affect the progress of young people
-Demonstrate how Islamophobia can be tackled in the classroom, in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum, with regards to respecting and understanding diverse religious identities in the UK
-Exemplify how responsible lesson planning, across all subjects, can be used to reduce Islamophobic attitudes in schools, with a focus on historical and modern contributions of Muslims to British society

Be sure to sign up, if you’re in attendance!
