Finding a Voice: A Guide for Muslim Parents & Educators in England on Navigating LGBTQ+ and RSE Education in Schools

In recent years, LGBTQ+ content taught in English schools under Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) has become a topic of contention. This has been the case for Muslim parents, parents from other faith groups, as well as non-religious parents. Attempts to question the merit of teaching such content to school-aged children are sometimes met with unfounded accusations of homophobia.

It is important that Muslim parents know how to frame their concerns and defend their democratic right to have their opinions on this issue both heard and respected. This guide aims to help both Muslim parents and schools navigate the sensitive discussions around the teaching of LGBTQ+ material as part of RSE.

Nurturing Muslim Identities

At MEND one of our key objectives as an organisation is to secure the religious rights of Muslims living in the UK for future generations. In line with this objective it is crucial we help nurture the identities of young Muslims to be comfortable and confident in their faith, especially in schools.

To assist parents and students in facilitating their religious requirements we have created a number of resources to empower local communities to be able to organise and advocate for religious needs such as prayer, fasting, halal food and religious dress.
