As part of Islamophobia Awareness Month Mend Leicester held a virtual talk for our women’s event, with some amazing guest speakers.
MEND Talks: The Secrets of My Success, invited two highly influential female doctors from different minority backgrounds talking about their journey towards the success which they have achieved, academically as well as on a personal level.
They spoke of the obstacles they faced in terms of gender discrimination in the work place, alongside religious discrimination, not only externally, but internally from within the community too.
The talks were inspirational and uplifting for all, as they also offered advice to the youth through advice they would give to their younger selves if they could.
Dr Kiran enlightened us with examples of how she was raised in a gender equal home and how this helped her to become a strong and independent woman and to further her career by becoming a lead in the medical field.
Dr Seema encouraged us with powerful words which teach us to be resilient and push forward, especially when told, No! Because in essence, the more you are told to sit down, the more you should push back and be the best you can be in whatever you seek to achieve.
This wonderful evening ended with some key take home messages. To truly understand what you want, planning effectively to achieve it and getting yourself a support network or mentor to help you along to a successful life.
