The Causes and Cures of Islamophobia at Jamia Masjid Riza Huddersfield

On Sunday 15th November 2020, Markazi Jamia Masjid Riza & Islamic Centre invited MEND to deliver the causes and cures of Islamophobia presentation to their congregation online via Facebook live.

During the session, our MEND Yorkshire and Humber Regional Manager discussed the various definitions of Islamophobia before breaking it down to think about why specific terms had been used in it.

He then went through the statistics around hate crime and how Islamophobia can manifest itself. He spoke about discrimination, especially institutional biases that persist due to the negative perception of Muslims in the UK. The audience were shocked to find out that only 5% of the UK is Muslim yet more than half of all religiously-aggravated hate crimes are targeted towards them.

Having looked through the way the media reports on Muslims, legislation around race and religion, and the difficulties when it comes to participation in media and politics, he then closed up the discussion with how we, as individuals and as a community, can work towards making the changes required to decrease the barriers currently facing Muslims and, ultimately, tackling Islamophobia.

If you’d like us to come and deliver a workshop or session at your Masjid, school or organisation, be sure to get in touch!
