On Saturday 19th March thousands took to the streets of Glasgow from across the whole of Scotland, as Stand Up to Racism called all to action against racism, Islamophobia and hate.
The march marked the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, marked on 21st March each year. This year’s theme was “VOICES FOR ACTION AGAINST RACISM” and to this end, all raised their voices on the march and at the rally in George Square.
At the rally, many took to the stage calling for an end to racism and hate. Speakers included Humza Yousuf MSP and Cabinate Secretary, Ameer Anwar Human Rights Lawyer, Mohammad Asif Human Rights Activist, Linsay Taylor MEND Scotland Regional Manager and many others. All of whom came together as one voice to call an end to all forms of hate.
MEND’s regional manager spoke of the need for those standing against hate to be in the majority and no longer in the minority. Highlighting the need for allyship and all coming together, not just the few to tackle the issue. Also highlighting the reasons for Islamophobia and the need to hold journalists, media outlets and politicians to account.
