On Thursday 24th August, MEND attended a roundtable discussion on Islamophobia with Edinburgh City Council, chaired by the Deputy Lord Provost, Cllr Cameron. This initial meeting took place following the adoption of the APPG definition of Islamophobia by the local authority in May 2023 – proposed by Cllr. Simita Kumar.
The purpose of the discussion with council officers and elected officials was to help deepen the councils understanding of the affects of Islamophobia on the local community. The meeting also aimed to look at how the council can mark Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) 2023. MEND was invited by the council to provide information and support during these discussions. Also in attendance at the meeting were various community organisations working with Muslims in the city, including Edinburgh Interfaith Association and AMINA – Women’s Resource Centre.
MEND would like to thank Edinburgh City Council for their determination to raise awareness of Islamophobia and to tackle hate crime in the local community, we look forward to further discussions with the council and to supporting with their future projects.
