MENDTalks: On Being Black and Muslim (Contributors)

MENDTalks: On Being Black and Muslim (Contributors)

Categories: Past Event Articles

Thursday June 11 2020

MEND Manchester have been working to address the many issues relating to the exclusion of Black Muslims from Muslim spaces, and the need to ensure that their voices and experiences are highlighted and amplified within the Muslim community to reduce anti-Black racism and to provide a united front in addressing the systemic oppression of Black people with wider society as well.

Over the last couple of months, we have been planning and organising a webinar which provides a platform for Black Muslims to talk about the issues that are pertinent to them. In order to ensure that grassroots voices are heard, we put a callout to the Muslim community to send in proposals about what they would like to discuss for 9 minutes.

We received an amazing response from those who wanted to contribute and the wide-ranging topics that came through impressed the volunteers as they read through the proposals. We plan to ensure that we continue to amplify these stories during our upcoming webinar and beyond. If you think that you have something to contribute to help us to continue our journey, be sure to get in touch so we can platform the voices that make up the Muslim community.

We hope that you can join us to hear from our contributors as they discuss the issues and life experiences they have. The webinar will be hosted by Manchester’s own, Fatima Abdimalik and will take place on Sunday 21st June. Find out more here!
