On Monday 14th March, MEND Yorkshire was invited by the Islamic Society at the University of York to deliver a session on Media in the UK.
MEND Yorkshire and Humber Regional Manager delivered a condensed version of the MEND media masterclass presentation. The presentation familiarised the attendees with key media institutions like the BBC, ITV and Sky and prominent stakeholders influencing the broadcasting agenda. The presenter then addressed media regulation and the challenges around processes and accountability.
The attendees then analysed various articles relevant to Muslims highlighting issues such as bias, language choice, and the use of distorted facts and opinions. The presentation ended on how to make an appropriate complaint to the relevant regulatory media body.
Attendees gained useful insight into the influence of Media. They were given the necessary tools to identify and address issues pertaining to Islamophobia, equipping them to deal with issues that arise within their localities and beyond.
MEND would like to thank the University of York Islamic Society for the invitation. If you would like to invite MEND to deliver a presentation on Islamophobia, Diversity & Inclusion, Media or Politics, contact us on [email protected].
