On Saturday 30th March, Mend’s Newham WG group delivered a Islamophobia: Causes and Cures presentation at Masjid Tauheed, Manor Park to a large gathering made up of a range of youngsters and elders too.
With the terror attacks in New Zealand still fresh in the minds of the Muslim community, the presentation attracted a good crowd, with many asking what they could do personally to reduce Islamophobia in their community. Mend Newham Chair, Maulana Tahir presented the causes to the audience, showing them the struggles Muslims face across the media and the lack of protection offered for Muslims under current legislation.
Maulana Ubaidullah followed with the Cures, informing the audience that while we are not all able to change things on a macro level, we all have the ability to do something on a micro level, whether it’s visiting our local councillor or MP, or writing a letter of complaint to a newspaper regarding an incorrect headline.
Maulana Tahir then concluded the presentation with a heartfelt plea to all about the IRU, and why we should get behind it and support such an invaluable cause and asset to the Muslim community.
The feedback from the audience was very good, and many people made intentions to support Mend in its efforts to tackle Islamophobia.
