Islamophobia Awareness Month with ELREC

Islamophobia Awareness Month with ELREC

Categories: Past Event Articles

Thursday November 26 2020

Via zoom, as is the norm these days, we came together to discuss the Hate Crime Bill in Scotland, Islamophobia and what the community can do to tackle it.

The event was organised by Edinburgh and Lothian Regional Equality Council, an organisation who works to tackle hate and prejudice in all its forms and to promote equality.

At the event, MEND was joined on the panel by Muslim Council of Scotland, AMINA Muslim Women’s resource centre and a young person representative.

We started with each panellist presenting an overview of their work relating to  Islamophobia, with the youth representative talking about Islamophobia concerning schooling and education. This conversation took us into a very engaging discussion about the education system, the need for education to be carried through all areas of the system including parent councils and teacher training.

This was followed by a wider discussion about the Hate Crime Bill, where it was agreed that communities must engage with the bill; third sector organisations and others must work to support this engaging.

What was clear from the event was that all felt that a more joined-up approach to tackling Islamophobia and other forms of hate was essential and that we all looked forward to furthering partnership work moving forward.
