On Thursday 19th November, MEND North West delivered a session on Islamophobia Awareness to the staff at University of Manchester Students Union.
It was important for the staff to engage to gain an appreciation for what Islamophobia means by providing definitions and giving contemporary examples of Islamophobia in various spheres of life. The workshop also explained how reports of Islamophobic hate crimes are increasing in all areas of the country, including the North West, showing this is as an societal issue that continues to prevail and that needs to be addressed.
During the session, we focussed on discussions around how we can work to ‘cure’ Islamophobia as a community. We looked through a number of campaigns and activities that communities can engage with to help increase education around Islamophobia and work to overcome the root causes of it.
We then took questions from the attendees which touched on how universities have a responsibility to address Islamophobia at an institutional level and how Journalism degrees can help to take steps towards addressing Islamophobia in the media.
Many thanks to Daz Skubich and team for inviting us in to deliver our session. We look forward to continuing to work with the University of Manchester on matters relating to Islamophobia.
Get in touch so we can deliver at your institution as well!
