Monday November 30 2020

On Tuesday 17th November, as part of Islamophobia Awareness Month, we invited Teakster, a visual artist, to hold a session on his journey into the field.

Teakster is a multi-award-winning artist, who pushes the boundaries of Islamic art in the 21st century. His work has been featured in publications and exhibitions across the USA, UAE, Europe, and the Far East for over a decade. He has exhibited his work to a diverse range of audience’s, including various world leaders and Middle Eastern royalty.

During the session, Teakster spoke about how he promotes Islamic values through his work and how his faith and upbringing has inspired his work. Teakster also spoke about what challenges have come from working in the industry, alongside his successes which include being able to collaborate with the artists that inspire him. During his talk he also spoke about the place of Islamic art in ‘Western’ art culture and how Islamophobia has impacted how this art is viewed and valued.

Attendees were able to ask technical questions to Teakster including mediums he preferred to use and how he monetised his work in an industry that is repeatedly undervalued. Teakster offered to help mentor budding artists as part of their development.

Many thanks to Teakster for delivering this session and be sure to check out and support his work.
