How we unite against Islamophobia and Racism
On Saturday 28th November, Stand up to Racism East Midlands collaborated with MEND Midlands to actively take part in the national IAM campaign, by hosting an online event on the topic of ‘How do we unite against Islamophobia and Racism’
The discussion was held on zoom and several esteemed speakers were invited to present their opinions on the topic, which resulted in a well-informed and insightful discussion.
The speakers included:
- Nahella Ashraf (Stand up to Racism)
- Robina Ruby Begum (Midlands Regional Manager MEND)
- Yousuf Farooq (Community Activist)
- Sajid Mohammed (Himmah, grassroots community, tackling poverty, well-being and racism)
- Sajid Fazal (Regional Officer, Unite the union)
The speakers touched upon how shared responsibility and empathy enables us to understand ‘the other’. They addressed how this action in itself allows individuals and representative organizations and institutions to identify how they can empower and support their BAME and Muslim peers, to prevent Islamophobia and racist behaviors in various sectors.
All speakers highlighted that ‘collaborative working’ by building stronger relationships, sharing knowledge and resources, to effectively protect and support the communities which we represent.
The event was truly insightful and forged new relationships to be born.
