On Monday 16th November, MEND Nottingham Working Group provided an Islamophobia Causes and Cures Session for the Nottingham community. Delivered by the MEND Midlands Regional Manager, the session provided an insightful introduction to what islamophobia is, how islamophobia manifests itself in society and what all individuals and communities can do to tackle islamophobia in all its forms.
The aim of the session was to educate the community on the reality of islamophobia and how much more pervasive and institutional it is than we might think. Looking at the role of media bias and discrimination as well as weak legislation, inadequate policing and poor political representation, this talk took participants through the causes of the extreme levels of islamophobia we are experiencing today.
This event also provided the ‘cures’ for islamophobia, through accessible actions we can all follow, such as reporting islamophobic incidents and getting involved with MEND’s work in educating the community, lobbying government and supporting survivors.
