IAM 2020: Causes and Cures of Islamophobia at Masjid Esa Ibn Mariam, Birmingham

MEND Birmingham were invited to host a Causes and Cures of Islamophobia Session for Masjid Ibn Easa online, to educate the Muslim community on what Islamophobia is, how Islamophobia manifests itself in society and what individuals and communities can do to tackle Islamophobia in all its forms.

The session was delivered by a MEND Birmingham volunteer who shared hate crime statistics and discussed in detail how multiple different elements cause Islamophobia to manifest itself looking at media bias, ineffective legislation and lack of Muslim participation in politics and media.

The event ended on highlighting the MEND Islamophobia Reponse Unit as a potential ‘cure’ that the attendees can take advantage of.  The free legal advice service was promoted heavily to ensure the participants understood that they do have a bespoke service to support their families and friends who may have fallen as a victim to Islamophobic hate crimes or discrimination.

In addition, ‘Community Engagement’ was also highlighted and the need of Muslim participation in media and politics to create awareness of Islamophobia.
