On Saturday 11th June, MEND was invited by the Huddersfield Council of Mosques to present MEND’s ‘Prayer space in schools’ easy-read guide to the local Imams and management.
MEND’s CEO attended the meeting and talked through the easy-read guide. Members from six out of the ten mosques were present at the meeting. The session started with the understanding that having prayer spaces in schools has wide-reaching benefits for pupils and the school environment. The session then looked at what the law says. Attendees were surprised to hear that ‘The Equality Act 2010’ protects that right and the Department for Education in its advice for school leaders, school staff, governing bodies and local authorities on how best to fulfil the Public Sector Equality Duty, actually gives the example of “enabling Muslim pupils to pray at prescribed times”. The session ended with a Q&A.
Huddersfield Council of Mosques thanked MEND’s CEO for attending and talking through the easy-read guide and giving more information on the topic.
