GOAV Scotland Hustings with AMINA Muslim Women’s Resource Centre

GOAV Scotland Hustings with AMINA Muslim Women’s Resource Centre

Categories: Past Event Articles

Friday March 26 2021

The second in our series of 2021 Scottish Parliament Holyrood election hustings took place on 25th March 2021 in partnership with AMINA Muslim Women’s Resource Centre.

Amina is an award-winning organisation, recognised by Muslim communities and key partners within Scotland for its pioneering and responsive approach to addressing key issues and needs of Muslim women.

For the hustings, as we have with all our hustings, we invited representatives from all major political parties in Scotland. On the night, all showed up ready to take part but unfortunately due to technical issues the Scottish Green Party representative was unable to take part in the event.

Political party representatives included:

  • Scottish Green Party – Nadia Kanyange,
  • Scottish National Party Kaukab Stewart,
  • Scottish Conservative Party – Pam Gosal,
  • Scottish Liberal Democrats – Tahir Jameel,
  • Scottish Labour Party- Pauline McNeil.

All candidates had a brief opportunity at the start of the event to introduce themselves and the political party they represented. There was then a Q&A session which included questions set around MEND’s Scottish policy pledges, https://www.mend.org.uk/mend-scotland-local-policy-pledges/. These pledges put in place by the Scottish Muslim community represent the needs and wants of the community moving in to the elections. The ask for the pledges is that all political parties implement them into their manifestos ahead of the elections.

The hustings also included previously provided and on the day questions from AMINA users and clients. These included questions around the proposed nationalisation of railways in Scotland and the need to priorities housing especially for women who have experienced domestic abuse.

The full event can be viewed at AMINA Facebook page where 554 viewers have already logged in to see the great event which was expertly hosted by AMINA’s own Mahrukh Shaukat: https://www.facebook.com/amina.mwrc.1/videos/1616297265225825
