Community Talk: Race Report

Community Talk: Race Report

Categories: Past Event Articles

Friday June 04 2021

On Friday 4th April, MEND Preston was invited on to ‘Community Talk’, hosted by a local community group called Deepdale Community Association. The aim of this conversation was to discuss the Race Report that was published by the government and to highlight how minority communities in the locality felt about it. MEND Preston appeared alongside the Preston Windrush Generation Group for this discussion.

Some of the discussion illustrated how the report delegitimises the historical and daily experiences of people of African and Asian descent and denies the lived experience of Black and minoritized communities – dismissing them in a patronising way. The main concern was that it takes the argument back to whether racism exists, rather than working on tangible solutions to address it, with the reframing of slavery as something positive being particularly problematic. We also spoke about how socio-economic factors – including class, income and education – affect outcomes but it is through institutional and structural racism that black and minorities communities find themselves acutely affected by these specific factors.

It was great to speak to other community leaders and we hope to work with them on our shared vision soon!
