Causes and Cures of Islamophobia Presentation: Preston Working Group
What causes ‘Islamophobia’ and what are the ‘cures’ for the increasing levels of prejudice, aversion, hostility, and hatred faced by Muslims today?
These questions, fundamental to the work carried out by MEND, were addressed on Monday 6th June 2022, by the Preston Working Group to better understand the current climate of Muslim hostility.
Delivered by MEND’s North West Regional Manager, Robina Ruby Begum, the presentation served to lay the foundations for the newly formed Preston Team as it initiates work to educate, empower and facilitate successful change in the local community.
The highly insightful session delved into the ‘visibility’ of Islamophobia, particularly the more discreet forms that go unnoticed and unreported and the more obvious examples of hate crime.
The impact of media negativity, lack of legislation, and structural barriers in civic society were explored as the consequent implications for the Muslim community.
MEND’s key objectives were discussed along with steps that the group can take to raise awareness in Preston and the local area to contribute to the excellent work of MEND to date.
All volunteers found the session to be an invaluable introduction to the root causes and cures of Islamophobia. As they implement the agreed plan of action over the next few months, it is hoped that the wider community will benefit from the education and training on offer and engage with the group to positively contribute to the fight against Islamophobia.
