On the 7th June, the Cardiff MEND WG and Junior Regional Manager were invited by Jess at Cardiff Radio’s ‘Unity in Our Community’ show to discuss the work we do. Our volunteers painted a picture of who is MEND, what we look like locally and what some of our achievements were in Cardiff.
We were also grateful for the opportunity to highlight the key myths and issues Muslim women face as well as the Muslim community in general with regards to our faith, practice and how these stereotypes create harmful narratives. Some of our key takeaways from the show:
— If you want to know more about the Muslim community and Islam, take part in the national campaign called Islamophobia Awareness Month, visit your local mosque events during Ramadan/Hajj (pilgrimage) and challenge divisive media narratives that spread misinformation.
— Perceptions of the Muslim community are negatively influences by many institutions, particularly the media and that is why it is more important now than ever to work with them.
— Some of our upcoming campaigns include actively recruiting an APPG taskforce in Cardiff, commemorating Islamophobia Awareness Month this November and we are actively recruiting new volunteers who are passionate about tackling Islamophobia in Cardiff/Wales.
