Black Muslim Heroes Presentation at Leeds Trinity University

Categories: Past Event Articles

Friday October 07 2022

On Wednesday 5th October, MEND Yorkshire was invited by Leeds Trinity University to deliver a presentation on influential Black Muslims in Islamic history. The event was organised to celebrate Black History Month and the contributions Black Muslims have made over the course of history across the globe.

MEND Yorkshire and Humber regional manager delivered a presentation looking at the lives of some of the most influential Black Muslim figures in history. One of the individuals mentioned in the presentation was Abu Uthman, known as Al-Jahiz, who authored over 200 books on literature, theology, zoology, and politico-religious polemics. The attendees were surprised to hear that 1000 years before Charles Darwin, Al-Jahiz outlined the principles of natural selection and evolution. Therefore, some have given him the title ‘The Father of the Theory of Evolution.

The presentation ended with a very interesting Q&A session in which global slavery was discussed and its impact on the current issues facing the Black community.

Staff and students at Leeds Trinity University thanked MEND for delivering a fascinating presentation.
