Black History Month: A look at Anti-Racist Education

Black History Month: A look at Anti-Racist Education

Categories: Past Event Articles

Monday October 26 2020

Mend in partnership with Al Masaar a Fourth Valley based charity hosted an open round table dialogue which took an in depth look at racist bullying in our schools and the need for anti-racist education. The event had a particular focus on the Forth Valley area due to the level of racist and Islamophobic incidents in the education system that have caused local children to change schools sometimes two and three times, even at primary level.

We had a spectacular line up of panellists from many areas including, Human rights solicitors, education providers, and leading advocates in the field.

Attendees included parents, teachers, MSP representatives, local and national activists, education bodies and other third sector organisations.

We started with introductions from the panel and some pre-prepared questions to get the conversation flowing. However, it was very quickly apparent that viewers were very keen to ask questions to the panel so we opened the floor to all with some extremely good questions coming at the panel and some really great input, examples and resources for all to use.

The discussion could have gone on for many hours but unfortunately, we had a schedule to stick to and thus had to wind the event up within an hour and a half. However all were keen to keep the conversation going which led to the idea for a Scotland wide event, planned for the 28th October 7.30-8.30 to continue the conversation.

Please tune in to the MEND Facebook page on 28th October for the live event and your opportunity to ask our panel your own questions.
