APPRECIATION CEREMONY #iAM2018

On November 25th, Wakefield Mend hosted an appreciation ceremony for IAM2018 and it was a huge success! Keeping with the current theme of this year’s IAM: recognising the contributions of local Muslims, we decided to honour those who enrich our community quietly, in their own way. The first of our contributors to receive the Mend trophy was Waheeda Janmohamed, who has been counselling voluntarily for various organisations for eighteen years. The second, Hope4Humanity, is a fairly new group. These youths spent the past Ramadan collecting for charity and then headed out to Syria to distribute it. The third contributor was Najeeda Asghar, who has been very active for many years in her attempts to get the Asian women to engage with the community and who has made efforts to make the community accessible for them.
The room was full.. but what’s not to like when there’s good food – chicken tikka sandwiches (specially ordered) and homemade chocolate cake by yours truly, to name but a few examples – and good company? Highlights of attendees included some local councillors, Wakefield’s MP Mary Creagh, and Inspector Helen Brear. Also, Wakefield Express will publish a story about our event! An all-round success, which I am hopeful we can recreate next IAM.
