The Times and Star reports on a “road rage” incident in which a woman racially abused and spat at a Muslim man.
Laura Morgan, 31, appeared at West Cumbria Magistrates Court today and admitted racially aggravated common assault on Ekren Yusuf.
The court heard Morgan was driving in her car and Mr Yusuf in a car behind her.
Ms Morgan’s partner called the police to report the manner in which Mr Yusuf was driving but when both cars continued on to an Asda store nearby, Morgan confronted Mr Yusuf.
Prosecutor Diane Jackson told the court Mr Yusuf made comments towards Ms Morgan and in response she “racially abused the victim and spat at him.”
Mitigating for Morgan, Claire Kirkpatrick, said that her client was not proud of her actions but that “there was significant provocation.”
She added: “She fully accepts the way she behaved was inappropriate.”
District Judge Gerald Chalk described the incident as “road rage” and told Morgan “you think it was six of one and half a dozen of the other but you shouldn’t have got involved.”
Mr Chalk said the racial abuse was humiliating and embarrassing for the victim.
Morgan was handed a nine-week curfew and ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 surcharge.
