Action Alert: Write to your MP to Oppose the Assisted Dying Bill in Key Debate This Friday

Wednesday May 14 2025

MPs will return the Assisted Dying Bill to Parliament this Friday where they are expected to debate and potentially vote on key proposed amendments.

The bill, formally titled the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, would allow adults diagnosed as terminally ill, with six months or less to live, to be assisted in dying if approved by two doctors. Although the final vote will not take place this week, the decisions made on Friday could significantly shape the final form of the legislation.

The bill has raised serious concerns. MPs like Naz Shah have rejected it as “not fit for purpose,” citing the lack of proper impact assessments and safeguards. A range of amendments intended to strengthen protections, such as excluding vulnerable groups like 16 and 17-year-olds or those with eating disorders, were rejected in the last session of voting.

Write to your MP urging them to attend Friday’s debate and when the time comes, to vote against this bill. These early decisions will help determine whether proper safeguards are in place or if vulnerable people will be put at greater risk.

Dear [MP's Name],

I am writing to urge you to attend the upcoming debate on the Assisted Dying Bill this Friday and when the time comes, to vote against it.

MPs and medical experts have raised deep concerns about the risks this bill poses, especially to vulnerable people. The bill in its current form is deeply flawed. It lacks sufficient safeguards and many important amendments aimed at protecting those at risk, such as victims of domestic abuse, young people and those with mental health conditions have already been rejected.

We must not legislate for assisted dying without ensuring that vulnerable groups in our healthcare system are properly protected. With the NHS under pressure and mental health services struggling to meet needs, now is not the time to introduce a law that could open the door to serious unintended consequences.

Please represent our concerns of by attending the debate and standing against this bill. It is vital that Parliament takes the time to properly scrutinise such life-altering legislation and that we prioritise care and support for those nearing the end of life, rather than assisted death.

Yours sincerely,

[Your Name]
