ACTION ALERT: Write to your MP to stop disability benefits cuts that will have big impact on vulnerable Muslims

Monday March 17 2025

The government is planning significant cuts to disability benefits, which could have the effect of forcing disabled people into work.

A coalition of 16 charities has issued a joint letter to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves, warning that these cuts could have a “catastrophic impact”, with 700,000 more disabled households at risk of falling into poverty. This comes after Labour’s refusal to scrap the two-child benefit cap, once again punishing struggling families under the guise of incentivising work.

Moreover, the cuts are expected to disproportionately affect Muslim communities, as nearly half (43.7%) of Muslims aged 65 and over in England live with a disability – more than any other religious group. Many Muslim households already face significant socio-economic deprivation, a situation made worse by the cost-of-living crisis.

The decision to slash the benefits budget isn’t a necessity; it’s a political choice. Disabled people should not be scapegoated for the UK’s economic crisis, which is the direct result of decisions made by previous governments.

Therefore, the government must urgently change course and strengthen support for disabled people and other vulnerable communities – not balance the books at their expense.

Dear [Enter MP’s name],

I am writing to express my concern about the government's planned cuts to disability benefits. These cuts could have a “catastrophic impact”, with 700,000 more disabled households at risk of falling into poverty.

Moreover, they are expected to disproportionately impact Muslim communities, as nearly half (43.7%) of Muslims aged 65 and over in England live with a disability – more than any other religious group. Many Muslim households already face significant socio-economic deprivation, a situation made worse by the cost-of-living crisis.

In fact, the UN has just released a report urging the government to take “corrective measures” to undo the damage caused by previous welfare cuts. Yet rather than addressing this issue, the government is poised to introduce even more cuts.

I urge you to call on the government to reverse course and halt these damaging cuts. Instead, the focus should be on strengthening support for disabled people and other vulnerable communities, helping them access work and build a better future for themselves and their families.

Yours sincerely,
