Pressure is increasing on Keir Starmer from within his own government to formally recognise a Palestinian state after France announced that it will do so at September’s UN General Assembly meeting.
Senior cabinet ministers, including Deputy PM Angela Rayner, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood along with over 200 MPs from across nine political parties, have all reportedly urged Starmer to recognise the State of Palestine.
The development comes as Israel is withholding aid to civilians in Gaza, causing widespread starvation throughout the war-torn strip. According to the United Nations’ World Food Programme, almost one in three Gazans are going without food due to Israel’s blockade and 90,000 people are in need of urgent treatment for malnutrition.
