ACTION ALERT: Complain to IPSO Over Nick Timothy’s Demonisation of Muslims for Standing with Gaza

Thursday November 02 2023

On October 29th, The Telegraph published a hate-filled, Islamophobic article by former Downing Street Chief of Staff, Nicholas Timothy.

In his article, Mr Timothy paints a grossly distorted picture of the recent protests that have taken place across Britain in support of the millions of civilians living under Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip. Instead of focusing on the overwhelming evidence that one of the key characteristics of this movement has been its diversity, he instead tries to reduce it to being the work of Islamists. Such a crude claim is effortlessly demonstrated as false by the massive volume of pictures, videos and articles which show that Muslims and non-Muslims, the religious and the non-religious, along with Jewish groups and LGBTQ+ groups, have all turned out to express outrage at the Israeli military’s mass atrocity crimes in Gaza.

Mr Timothy’s article is filled with gross distortions of the truth, such as his unverifiable claim that, “[m]any of those attending the protests are unembarrassed about supporting the rape and murder of Israeli civilians.” Mr Timothy’s comments are the latest instalment in a broader effort by the right wing since October 7 to vilify those who stand in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian of Gaza. We urge all of those who care about having the Palestine cause presented in a fair light to register a complaint with the Independent Press Standards Organisations (IPSO), and to help in the push-back against those who wish to muzzle us for exercising our freedom of speech in condemning Israeli war crimes.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to complain to IPSO:

Step 1: Click here

Step 2: click “material published in print and/or online”

Step 3: Enter “Telegraph.co.uk (Telegraph Media Group Ltd)” into “name of publication” section

Step 4: ‘Have you previously contacted this publication? – Enter ‘No.’  ‘Add each headline or photograph from this publication related to the complaint’ – Enter ‘British society will pay a terrible price for indulging extremism’ and ’29/10/2023.’ ‘Clauses breached, specify which clauses of the Editors Code have been breached’ – Click ‘1 Accuracy.’ ‘Reasons for Telegraph.co.uk (Telegraph Media Group Ltd) breaching this clause’ – Enter the following:

‘Nicholas Timothy paints a grossly distorted picture of the recent protests that have taken place across Britain in support of the millions of civilians living under Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip. Instead of focusing on the overwhelming evidence that one of the key characteristics of this movement has been its diversity, he instead tries to present it as the work of Islamists. Mr Timothy’s article is filled with gross distortions of the truth, such as his unverifiable claim that, “[m]any of those attending the protests are unembarrassed about supporting the rape and murder of Israeli civilians.” This is not merely presented as Mr Timothy’s opinion, but as a factual assertion. However, he supplies no evidence in the form of, for example, a hyperlink to a source that might support his claim. Mr Timothy’s article is therefore guilty of distortion and there is good reason to believe outright falsification, and is therefore inaccurate under Clause 1 of the Editor’s Code of Conduct.’
