Mend Action Alert – Littlejohn: Promoting anti-Muslim bigotry
Thursday February 20 2014
Dear Activist,
We hope you will have learnt of the appalling article by Richard Littlejohn on his Daily Mail page on Sheikh Haitham al-Haddad and the Muslim Research and Development Foundation.
The article repeated an array of Islamophobic tropes expressing virulent anti-Muslim bigotry.
The article is a pertinent reminder of why a self-regulator with strong powers to curtail ‘prejudicial or pejorative references to race [and] religion’ is fundamental to restraining such hate-filled tirades.
What you can do Littlejohn shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it. An article which contained a semblance of similar bigotry directed at other minority groups in the UK, ethnic or racial, would be openly condemned.
It is important that you let Littlejohn and the Daily Mail know that anti-Muslim bigotry is every bit as objectionable as anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia. They wouldn’t print the latter, so why publish bigotry directed at Muslims?
1. Write to Richard Littlejohn – [email protected]
2. Write to Paul Dacre, editor of the Daily Mail – [email protected]
3. Write to the Press Complaints Commission and point out errors in accuracy (Clause 1) and discrimination
(Clause 12) – http://www.pcc.org.uk/complaints/form.html
We too will be taking the matter up with the Editor of the Daily Mail, the PCC and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. We will, of course, keep you apprised of any developments.
