Wakefield Muslim councillor urges victims to report hate crime after facing abuse

The Yorkshire Post reports on an alleged incident of racist abuse against Muslim councillor Nadeem Ahmed, leader of the Conservative group on Wakefield Council.

The local paper reports Cllr Ahmed claims he was recently abused on two separate occasions, when he “was out running in his Wakefield South ward and while eating at a fast-food outlet in the city centre”.

Cllr Ahmed said he had reported the incident at the fast food restaurant to West Yorkshire Police and an investigation is currently underway.

Cllr Ahmed said: “A lot of people do endure racist abuse and treat it simply as part of their everyday lives, which is totally wrong but a fact of life.”

He urged local residents to come forward and report hate crimes to the police saying, “The police have been brilliant, and I really hope that anyone else who does have similar experiences comes forward.”
