Two men fined for racist abuse and assault on Muslim male in Crawley

The Crawley News reports on the sentencing of two men at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on February 24 on charges of racially aggravated beating and the use of racially aggravated threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment.
Aaron Gray, 34 and Paul Smith 38, appeared before magistrates in connection with an incident on 23 December 2015.
The court heard that Gray “attacked Ahmed Ali in Crawley” and Smith “harassed him”. Both men pleaded guilty to the charges.
The local paper reports “Magistrates agreed both defendants had displayed racially aggravated behaviour and sentenced them accordingly.”
Gray was fined £490 and ordered to pay a £49 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs. Smith was fined £367 and ordered to pay a £36 victim surcharge and the same court costs.
