ITV News and the Bristol Post report on the court appearance of three people charged with a religiously aggravated assault offence in connection with the attack on Totterdown mosque in January 2016.
Mark Bennett, 48, his wife Alison Bennett, 46, and Angelina Swailes, 31, were due to stand trial at Bristol Crown Court yesterday, Monday 21 March, but they changed their plea at the last minute and pleaded guilty to the charges. The trio have been released on bail and are due to return to court later this week for sentencing.
A fourth person, Kevin Shaun Crehan, 34, pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence when he appeared in court in February in connection with the attack on the mosque. He is due to be sentenced on 24 March.
Totterdown mosque was vandalised on a Sunday afternoon in January with a group of people throwing bacon at the mosque doors, wrapping bacon around the door handles of the mosque, abusing elderly worshippers who were inside the mosque at the time of the attack, and foisting a ‘no more mosques’ banner on the mosque premises.
