A mosque in Stockport has been vandalised after leaflets were distributed allegedly containing inaccurate information about plans to expand the Mosque. |
From the Stockport Express:
“Three cars were sprayed with racist graffiti on Green Pastures and stones and eggs were thrown at the Heaton Muslim Community Trust (HMCT) on Battersea Road over the last month.
“Officers are also investigating reports of graffiti on walls nearby.
“Police say leaflets containing inaccurate information about the centre’s plans for a major extension have been circulated in the area, and have not ruled out a connection.
“Sergeant Howard Smith from the Stockport North Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: “I want to appeal to anyone who knows anything about these incidents to contact police.
“It is mindless criminal damage and we need to catch those responsible and put them before the courts.
“It has also been brought to our attention that leaflets containing inaccurate information about the planning application from the Heaton Muslim Community Trust (HMCT) have been circulated in the area.”
The incident in Stockport is a one of several incidents in recent months where mosques have been attacked across the UK (see here, here, here and here). It also bears some similarity to the attack on a university campus building in September in reaction to false information describing it as the dome of a mosque.
