Local Newcastle paper, The Chronicle, reports on the arrest of six men after a firework was thrown at a mosque and Islamic centre in Whitley Bay.
The centre had worshippers in it at the time of the attack on the afternoon of Wednesday 5 March.
Police have arrested six men on suspicion of criminal damage, two aged 29, and four others aged 27, 25, 23 and 19.
Abdul Hannan, leader of the centre, told the local paper: “We were praying at the time of the incident and got such a shock as it sounded like a bomb had gone off. We could see smoke and fire at the window. We would never expect anything like this to happen and we don’t think that we were deliberately targeted as people in the area are very friendly and we get on well in the community. I think it’s just one of these things that could happen anywhere at any time.”
The centre was re-opened last November after extensive refurbishment work with local MP, Alan Campbell, officiating at the ceremony.
