Shadow Councillor Scheme in Sutton

Shadow Councillor Scheme in Sutton

Categories: Latest News

Wednesday September 02 2009

Residents of the London Borough of Sutton who are interested in becoming local councillors can avail themselves of an opportunity to learn more about the Council’s work through the Shadow Councillor Scheme.

The Shadow Councillor Scheme is a unique opportunity for individuals to learn about a councillor’s role and responsibilities through observation and participation at selected meetings, surgeries and workshops. Successful candidates will gain an insight into the role of a councillor, how they represent the people of their ward and how local democracy works in practice.

With local elections to be held in London in May 2010, this is a great time for budding councillors to get a feel for the ropes.

The scheme is only open to those living in Sutton. To find out more, or to apply, contact Jeanne Vernette, Scheme Coordinator, Sutton Minority Ethnic Forum via email: [email protected] or call 020 8770 6199.

You can watch a video of local councillors recounting their experiences and responsibilities, here.

If your local council doesn’t currently run a Shadow Councillor Scheme, why not ask that one be started? You can find contact details for councils across the UK here.
