Scottish Muslims and the Referendum on Independence

Scottish Muslims and the Referendum on Independence

Categories: Latest News

Monday February 17 2014

The Sunday Herald features an article exploring Scottish Muslim views on the Scottish referendum ahead of a debate at Strathclyde University organised by FOSIS (Federation of Students’ Islamic Societies).

Looking at ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ perspectives, the newspaper asks Muslims about their voting intentions.

Anum Qaisar, student affairs representative for FOSIS Scotland, set out her reason for voting No, saying “For me, it is the basic concept that I think countries should be building bridges and not borders.”

Shahida Hussain, a Labour Party member for 20 years, tells the paper, “I will always be Labour and I will only vote Yes…if it is the way the Labour party wants to go.”
