Racist attack over pizza in Scotland

Racist attack over pizza in Scotland

Categories: Latest News

Wednesday September 13 2017

Dunfermline Press reports that a man is to be sentenced after being found guilty of uttering racially offensive language at a takeaway shop owner in Kincardine, Scotland.

Mark Davis, 31, acted in a racially aggravated manner towards Mohammed Khan, after he was told the shop did not do a particular size of pizza.

After hanging up the phone, Davis went to the shop and called Mr Khan a “black stinking b*****” and a “Paki b******”.

Davis is to return to court on October 4 for sentencing.

This disconcerting case of racism in the UK reveals how long is the road to end racial and religious hate crimes in the country. In 2015/16, Scotland has witnessed a 3% increase in religious hate crimes, with 581 religiously aggravated charges reported. The number goes up to 631 for those reported under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

Race crime remains the most commonly reported hate crime in Scotland, with 3,712 charges in 2015/16.

Chief Constable Phil Gormley has urged the people of Scotland to come forward and report hate crimes, too often unreported.

He said: “This doesn’t have to be a police officer, and we work closely with a wide variety of partner agencies, charities and community groups to offer ways in which victims or witnesses can raise a concern and get the information to the play via a third party.”

UPDATE:

Davis was fined £375 and also ordered to pay £200 in compensation to the shop employee for the concern and upset.
