The Birmingham Mail reports that a man was convicted by the Birmingham Magistrates Court on three counts of religiously aggravated assaults in Lozells, West Birmingham.
Davion Kelly, 34, attacked his first victim on July 11 by throwing liquid at her while she was in her car, punching her and shouting abuses. Two days later, on July 13, Mr Kelly approached two Asian women as they waited for the traffic light in their cars, spitting at them and accusing them of being terrorists.
Initially jailed for six months, Mr Kelly’s conviction increased to twelve months to reflect the religious aggravated element of his crimes.
As explained by Meloney Hughes, Senior Crown Prosecutor with West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service (CPS): “Over a three day period, Davion Kelly targeted his victims purely due to their ethnicity.”
He added: “People from all communities have a right to be protected from the prejudice at the root of religious hate crime, and the Crown Prosecution Service is determined to play its part in this.”
