Rights group Muslim Engagement & Development (MEND) have launched a new report The Great Debunk: Challenging Islamophobic Conspiracy Theories, which examines how false narratives about Muslims once limited to the far-right fringes have entered mainstream political, media, and public discourse. From claims of “Muslim no-go zones” to population replacement myths, these conspiracy theories portray Muslims as a demographic, cultural, and political threat to Britain, fuelling Islamophobia and deepening social divisions.
The report outlines how these ideas are disseminated through political rhetoric, media and social media platforms and how public figures and institutions legitimise them, normalising Islamophobic sentiment and justifying discriminatory policies.
This is a crucial intervention as Islamophobic conspiracies have real-world consequences, from hate crimes to far-right terrorism. By exposing how these ideologies gain traction and offering clear recommendations to address them, the report provides a roadmap for policymakers, media and civil society to counter rising Islamophobic hate and protect our nation’s social cohesion.
Commenting on the issue, Linsay Taylor, CEO of MEND, said:
“These dangerous conspiracy theories have moved from the fringes into everyday conversation, fuelling prejudice and harming real lives. Our report exposes how these myths spread and we call on all political leaders, the media and communities to challenge this Islamophobic misinformation and protect the social cohesion vital for Britain’s future.”

About Muslim Engagement and Development:
MEND is a not-for-profit company that helps to empower and encourage British Muslims within local communities to be more actively involved in British media and politics. British Muslims have remained on the margins of public and political debate about their religion and place in modern Britain for too long and the level of Muslim participation in media and politics remains woefully low. MEND seeks to enable British Muslims to engage more effectively with political and media institutions and play a greater role in British politics and society by instilling confidence, competence and awareness. Enhancing mainstream participation by communities that are under-represented and vulnerable is an important step towards deepening and strengthening our democracy.
