"Muslims will perish" painted onto wall of Kirkcaldy Islamic Centre

Scottish papers Herald Scotland and Fife Today report on acts of racist vandalism on an Islamic Centre in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The Islamic Centre was sprayed with graffiti reading “Muslims will perish by JC” while “five vehicles belonging to members of the centre” were also targetted with “crosses painted on number plates, windows and on a bonnet”. The attack happened on Monday night.

Naeem Khalid, co-ordinator of Fairness, Race Awareness and Equality (FRAE) Fife, said: “This was a callous act at a very sensitive time, and we are hoping that it was just an isolated incident.

“Police have put on extra patrols and carried out door-to-door enquiries in the area as a proactive measure which is good.

‘‘For the next 30 days there will be prayer events held five times a day and people worshipping don’t want to have to worry about their vehicles being vandalised while they are in the centre.”

A number of incidents of reprisal attacks and racist vandalism have been reported since the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich in May. Last week the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said anti-Muslim attacks in the capital had increased eightfold in the two weeks following Lee Rigby’s death.
