Muslim women and children sharing spirit of Ramadan in Bedfordshire

Muslim women and children sharing spirit of Ramadan in Bedfordshire

Tuesday June 27 2017

On the weekend of the 24th of June, a group of Muslim women and children took to the streets of Biggleswade city centre where they set up a variety of stalls in order to share a message of unity and peace, by a means of engagement and understanding.

The individuals were from a group called Rosebuds, which provides Islamic studies and social events for women and children.

The aim of the event was to share the meaning and spirit of Ramadan with non-Muslim community members, and allow a platform for productive dialogue or any questions people may have for Muslims – especially in light of recent attacks associated with Muslims by mainstream media.

Snacks and goody bags were provided, as well as CD’s of Qur’an recitations, informational leaflets, and pocket-sized Qur’ans.

One of the Muslim sisters, Rabia Syed, said: “We were able to provide better understanding about Ramadan, and help in clearing any misconceptions and build positive relationships within the community.

“The feedback and interaction from the public was truly amazing.

“People asked questions, shared their feedback and views about the stall and expressed their honest views about the negativity that is being spread within the media about Islam.

“People highlighted themselves that the negativity has nothing to do with any faith and were happy that we held this stall as it illustrated true peace and an example of what Islam is about and what it represents.

“People really liked the fact that we chose to do this whilst we were actually fasting, as this allowed people to actually see our beliefs in action and as an example.”
