The Coventry Telegraph reports a racist incident at the West Orchards shopping centre in Coventry last Saturday where a witness claimed a Muslim family were repeatedly abused.

The witness told the local paper he was on the escalator when he heard the abuse.

The witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the incident occurred around 5pm on Saturday 29 October.

The witness, told the local paper: “Going up the escalator I became aware of someone calling something out in my direction.

“As I looked down there were two white adult males in their late 30s on the other escalator, and one was looking up at the Muslim family in front of me repeatedly calling out ‘P***” with a very smug and self-satisfied grin on his face.

“I was both offended and shocked that this was happening in such an openly public space and surprised that very few other people even seemed to notice or weren’t prepared to intervene in any way.”

The witness said he reported the incident to the shopping centre’s management who checked CCTV footage to identify the men but the pair had already left the shopping centre

A spokesman for West Orchards Shopping Centre confirmed that the incident was reported to management on Saturday.

The spokesman said the centre had a “zero tolerance” policy on any racist or anti-social behaviour.
