MEND hosts luxury dinner on Thames Cruise

Categories: Latest News

Wednesday April 25 2018

Last week MEND hosted a luxury cruise and dinner to highlight the significance of Islamophobia in our society – but also the significant amount of work MEND is doing in tackling it and how MEND is empowering the British Muslim community!

The event started with Sufyan Ismail, the founder of MEND, speaking about how the organisation has grown in just a few years to be the autonomous and brilliant organisation it is now. With 33 working groups and teams across all parts of the country organised by hundreds of volunteers, MEND has hosted a wide array of events aimed at raising the awareness of Islamophobia and empowering communities in tackling the issue.

Huma Malik, MEND’s Islamophobia Response Unit (IRU)’s Hate Crime Caseworker, spoke next about the crucial work the IRU is doing in providing free and confidential support. The IRU provides emotional support as well as free legal support, advice and referral services to victims of Islamophobia. Since April 2017, the IRU has provided support in more than 170 cases of hate crime with the majority of victims being young Muslim women.

The head of MEND’s Advocacy team, Isobel Kingscott, spoke about the high-quality research conducted by MEND, and its applications across society. The in-house activities of the team set the basis for MEND’s agenda, and are instrumental in briefing politicians of the many issues affecting the British Muslim community.

The event was organised by an enthusiastic and dedicated team of 20 volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure its success. The dinner was attended by more than a 100 people and a number of organisations including Cube Network, Wharf Sisters, BT Network, Emerald and the Association of Muslim Lawyers. The excellent weather provided a great setting for an exciting evening of networking, which saw experts and professionals coming together to exchange ideas on empowering British Muslims.

This was one of several events that MEND has planned for 2018 and its huge success is evidence of the community’s determination in tackling Islamophobia. While the challenges remain significant, MEND is confident that our efforts will continue to bring down barriers and enhance Muslim participation in politics and media.
