The Asian Image and BBC News report on the court appearance of a self-proclaimed “patriot” on trial for two charges of having an explosive substance and two charges of having a document or record which “has information likely to be useful by a person preparing acts of terrorism” for allegedly trying to “defend the UK from an attack by Isis.”
Prosecutor Michelle Heeley told Nottingham Crown Court the accused, Roger Smith, had “stockpiled” weapons at his home because of “all the Isis shit.”
Mr Smith, 46, allegedly “amassed an arsenal of crossbows, arrows and knives in order to prevent an extremist attack similar to that which claimed the life of Lee Rigby.”
Mr Smith is also on trial for possessing a copy of The Anarchists’ Cookbook.
Ms Heeley told the court that when Mr Smith was arrested by officers he complained about being treated as “a terrorist” and “”like I am a Muslim.”
Ms Heeley said Mr Smith had told police officers on the way to the station that he had got things in his house to defend “us” against the Muslims.
Smith also suggested police “should be thanking him since they would be fighting side by side when the Muslims came to attack,” Ms Heeley said.
The court was told Smith was intending to fly flags of Israel and the Knights Templar outside of his address along with a St George’s Cross, “as they were part of his heritage and he was a patriot”.
PSCO Matthew Holden, who had several dealings with Smith over a dispute with a neighbour, said Smith had “openly” mentioned his possession of “a compound bow and a set of three knives”.
Holden further told the court, “He said words to the effect that Islam was an evil religion and Islam was at war with the West.”
Mr Holden said Mr Smith also uttered “words to the effect that Barack Obama was probably a Muslim and referred to him as an ape”.
Mr Smith’s property was searched in October 2015 and he appeared in court charged with terrorism offences in June 2016.
His trial continues.
