Man denies trying to tear off Muslim woman’s face veil in Sunderland shopping centre

Local paper, The Chronicle, reports on the court appearance of a man who is alleged to have forcibly removed a Muslim woman’s face veil as she waited outside a shop with her nine year old son at the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland on 3 July.

Peter Scotter was charged with one count of religiously aggravated assault by beating, for the alleged assault on the Muslim female, and one count of causing alarm, harassment or distress which was religiously aggravated for allegedly directing abusive remarks at the police constable who responded to the incident report.

At Newcastle Crown Court this morning, Scotter denied both charges.

A trial date has been fixed for March 13, 2017 and Scotter was further released on conditional bail.

The bail conditions include the requirements that he not enter The Bridges and is not to contact prosecution witnesses.
