BBC News, The Inverness Courier, Aberdeen Press and Journal, West Highland Free Press, The Northern Times, The Courier and Scotland on Sunday all report on the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor, Drew Millar, after he allegedly shared anti-Muslim material from the far right group, Britain First, on Facebook.

Drew Millar, a councillor for Skye, was accused by the Highland Council Liberal Democrat group of sharing anti-Muslim messages from the far right group. The Liberal Democrat group stated “In early October, the group was made aware that Councillor Drew Millar of Skye had shared with friends on his Facebook page images and comments which came from Britain First, an extreme right-wing organisation. This was anti-Islamic material used by Britain First to stir up religious hatred.”

The West Highland Free Press reports the accusations relate to two posts on Millar’s Facebook page, which have now been removed.

One of the posts read: “Nick Clegg says teaching British values in schools could offend moderate Muslims – share if you think Nick Clegg is a cretin.”

Millar told BBC News that he had also shared images of demonstrators holding “banners against freedom of speech”.

Millar, responding to media interest in the affair said, “I am certainly not anti-Muslim and I was not trying to incite any racial or religious hatred”.

He added, “I don’t think it was from Britain First” and insisted he is “innocent until proven guilty”.

The post regarding Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat party leader, Nick Clegg’s stated concern over the negative impact on Muslims of teaching ‘British values’ in schools was indeed initially posted by Britain First who placed it on the group’s Facebook page in June.

The Liberal Democrat Group requested that Millar to stand aside from his position as Chair of the Community Safety, Public engagement and Equalities Committee while an investigation was carried out but Millar chose to resign from the party group at Highland Council and as a member of the Liberal Democrat party.
