Kick It Out campaign shocked by significant increase in incidences of abuse

Wednesday February 07 2018

Football’s equality campaign Kick It Out, which aims to tackle racism and discrimination, observed a large increase in discriminatory incidents reported at the mid-way point of the 2017/18 season.

The campaign said 282 incidents were reported in football, professional and grassroot, and on social media platforms. This was an increase of more than 50% on the number of incidents recorded by the campaign at the 2016-17 midpoint.

Racist behaviour was found to be the highest form of discrimination reported, making up 54% of all complaints.

The Chair of Kick It Out, Lord Ouseley, emphasised the fact that this surge of abuse requires action from multiple stakeholders within the wider society.

He said: “Ultimately, tackling discrimination must be a collective effort. The leaders across all sections of society and football, as well as the broader public and football supporters themselves, need to take action, report discrimination and help us eradicate hatred.”

It is important that anyone who believes they are in immediate danger from a prejudice-based hate crime should contact the police as soon as possible on 999. If not in immediate danger, or if you have suffered a prejudice-based hate crime in the past, then you can report it using the non-emergency number 101.

You can also – in addition to the police – report any Islamophobic hate crime to MEND’s Islamophobia Response Unit (IRU) here. This allows us to monitor levels of abuse and compile accurate data on the levels of Islamophobia.

The IRU can also help you contact and deal with the police (if you choose to do so), and signpost you towards free legal advice and emotional support that may be available.
