An interesting clip from an election hustings in marginal seat Ilford North where the incumbent, Lee Scott (pictured), is asked about his membership of the Conservative Friends of Israel and his pro-Israeli stance. |
Scott replies to a question from the audience:
“Israel is the finest democracy in the Middle East, indeed it is the only democracy.
“I pray for peace for both sides in the ME and hope that there will be a two state solution but there must be an end to terrorism against innocent Israelis by terrorist organizations.
“I will never bow my head on that, I will never curtail my opinion on that no matter what is done to try and divide our community.
Please take note and write that down.”
Those living in Ilford North who would like to see some responsibility for regression in the peace process rightly leveled against Israel for its snubbing demands to comply with the UN’s recommendation on the holding of an inquiry into allegations of war crimes committed during the brutal Gaza offensive (extensively documented by the Goldstone report and Amnesty International), or more recently, its dismissing demands to suspend settlement building in Occupied East Jerusalem, will be justifiably shocked by Scott’s refusal to condemn the killing of innocent Palestinians with as much passion as he condemned the killing of innocent Israelis. Or does Scott consider Palestinian lives less worthy than their Israeli neighbours?
