EDL protest in Leeds: pigs head thrown, four EDL members arrested

The Yorkshire Post reports on the correction of a police statement in relation to an English Defence League protest in Leeds last weekend, confirming that a pig’s head was thrown at the site of the pub that is earmarked for conversion into an Islamic community centre.

The local paper notes that its coverage had to be amended after local police claimed the allegations of pig’s heads being brandished by protestors was ‘inaccurate’. The police statement said:

“A man was spotted wearing a latex pigs mask which did come off and may at some point have been thrown in the crowd during the protest.

“But at no point were protesters seen throwing animal parts of any kind.”

This has however been retracted after video footage showing that pig’s head were actually used appeared on YouTube. The police issued a new statement saying:

“Having viewed subsequent footage of the demonstration and spoken directly with officers involved we can confirm there was a pig’s head found on the floor in the crowd which was quickly removed by officers and disposed of.

“This was in addition to the latex mask.”

Four men were arrested at Saturday’s demonstration in Leeds according to BBC News.
