Conservative councillor suspended for 12 months after 'bin bag' Facebook remark

Monday March 03 2014

A Conservative councillor who was under investigation by the party’s Central Office for posting a comment on Facebook likening a Muslim woman in niqab and her children to ‘black bin bags’, has been expelled from the party for 12 months.

The Conservative group at Enfield Borough Council withdrew the whip from Chris Joannides after the comments came to light. His membership of the party was placed under investigation of the national party board last year.

On Friday, the Conservative Party suspended Joannides’ membership for a year after concluding an investigation into the affair.
